I’m in Egypt right now alhumdulillah…been here over a month now. SubHanAllah the way time flies. The MAS Youth SAP (Study Abroad Program) group arrived safely last week alhumdulillah. They all went out to Luxor and Bahariyyah this past week and absolutely loved it.
I traveled to Bahariyya a few weekends ago with some good friends. Its basically can Oasis in Egypt which used to be an ocean and now is barren desert. Within the are there’s the Black Desert which used to be a volcano, the White Desert which used to be an ocean, and Crystal Mountain which has the softest sand and huge clear crystals everywhere. It was quite possibly one of the most amazing trips I’ve taken.
When you’re in the desert you realize how insignificant you are as a human. Allah subHanahu wa ta’aala has created creations so much greater than us in beauty and vastness. In the middle of the desert all you see around you is miles and miles of sand and mountains. In the night the sky was so dark and the stars were so bright and visible, devoid of dust and the pollution of our big cities.
We were reflecting on the strength of the mountains in the desert. When Allah subHanAllahu ta’aala says in Surat al-Hashr:
لَوْ أَنزَلْنَا هَذَا الْقُرْآنَ عَلَى جَبَلٍ لَّرَأَيْتَهُ خَاشِعاً مُّتَصَدِّعاً مِّنْ خَشْيَةِ اللَّهِ وَتِلْكَ الْأَمْثَالُ نَضْرِبُهَا لِلنَّاسِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ
59:21
Sahih International: If We had sent down this Qur’an upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled and coming apart from fear of Allah . And these examples We present to the people that perhaps they will give thought.
Imagine the strength and power of the Qur’an a creation so strong as mountains would crumble down under the Words of Allah. SubHanAllah. It’s ayaat like this one that try to convey to us the importance and magnitude of the Qur’an. But what are we as Muslims doing to understand the Qur’an and the deepness of its message? Are we being effected by the Words of Allah the way that the mountains would? Its ayaat like this one that renew my intentions and continue to motivate me to study the beautiful and rich language of Arabic.
There is truly no way for us to understand the miracle and majesty of the Qur’an without studying it in the language in which it was revealed. Allah subHanahu wa ta’aala could have revealed the Qur’an in English or any other language but He chose to reveal it in Arabic. Why?
Allah subHanahu wa ta’aala says in Surat al-Fussilat
44:
Sahih International: And if We had made it a non-Arabic Qur’an, they would have said, “Why are its verses not explained in detail [in our language]? Is it a foreign [recitation] and an Arab [messenger]?” Say, “It is, for those who believe, a guidance and cure.” And those who do not believe – in their ears is deafness, and it is upon them blindness. Those are being called from a distant place.
Is it not time yet that we come back to the pure language of the Qur’an? Is it not time that stop limping with the translations?
May Allah help us to come back to the true understanding the Qur’an. Ameen.
